Lakme recently launched their new sunscreen – Sun Expert Dry Matte Fluid SPF50 PA++++. Now, I wasn’t really planning to give this one a try for one major reason that, it contains Avobenzone and has chemical filters.

I like everything about this sunscreen — from lightweight texture to ease of blendability and absorption. It did not leave any white cast, shine, or greasy residue, and neither did it make my skin feel heavy. It did not sting my eyes, and neither there was piling-up or breakouts. The only thing that bothered me was that it has chemical filters, which are generally not considered safe especially for acne-prone skin in the long-run.

I have been trying to avoid sunscreens with this chemical filter, Avobenzone, and have been sticking to sunscreens with physical filters only, such as zinc dioxide or titanium dioxide. Or hybrid filters (chemical + physical) if it avoids these chemical filters such as the one I mentioned above, Avobenzone, oxybenzone, and a few more that can trigger skin allergies and can lead to breakouts and rashes.

This is simply because of what I have learned over the years regarding the potential side effects of chemical filters in sunscreens especially Avobenzone.

Does Lakme Dry Matte Fluid Sunscreen Contain Avobenzone?

Yes, it does — by the name of “Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane“.

So, did the sunscreen led to breakouts?

Surprisingly, No. It worked just like ISDIN sunscreen. I don’t know if there is a factor of stability or what when it comes to ingredients but most of the time, sunscreens with these chemical filters (which I shared above) usually end up giving breakouts except for ISDIN and this Lakme fluid sunscreen.

Well, then, is it safe for acne-prone skin?

That’s a tricky question simply because of the ingredients mentioned and the fact that it did not result in any acne on my skin (sensitive and acne-prone).

The chemical filters in this Lakme fluid sunscreen – Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Octocrylene, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, are possibly known to trigger sensitive skin leading to skin allergies and in a few cases, can further lead to watery eyes and sore throat.

A few of these are still often accepted by skin, but these – Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) and Octocrylene can generally lead to breakouts and other allergies, including rosacea, rashes, eye allergies, and dermatitis.

Please note, I am no doctor or expert. All of this information is from what I have read and learned via reliable sources over time.

Now, in my case, the sunscreen did not lead to any allergies or breakouts but because of the chemical filters in the sunscreen which are not considered safe for the skin especially for sensitive skin, I won’t mark this as safe for not only acne-prone skin but in general too simply because of constant debates against chemical filters.

The ingredients oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and avobenzone are all systemically absorbed into the body after use, according to studies published by the FDA. These studies also reported that the ingredients could be detected on the skin and in the blood weeks after they had last been used.

Unfortunately, the major downside of chemical sunscreens is that they contain more harmful ingredients, such as PABA, oxybenzone, and octinoxate. While chemical sunscreens may be less visible on the skin, some chemical UV filters may enter the bloodstream and are linked to health effects such as endocrine disruption and skin irritation. Additionally, they may lead to various toxicological impacts on marine life and coral reefs bleaching.

Why do sunscreens have chemical filters then?

To deal with the white cast. Back in the days, there was a huge concern with sunscreens leaving white cast because mineral or physical filters tend to leave white cast but with advancement, I believe this issue has been worked upon because I don’t see any whitecast with the sunscreens I use.

How I got the sunscreen if I wasn’t planning to buy?

I received this as a sample with one my Blinkit order and that’s when I thought I can give it a try and see how it works for my skin and take this as an opportunity to share my experience on the blog for anyone who is looking for a review of this sunscreen.

Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen: Which is Better?

How to Use

Take about 2-finger amount and massage gently across face and neck.

Review in Detail: Lakme Fluid Sunscreen SPF50 PA++++

My Skin Type: Combination skin with oily in the peak summer season and dry in the winter season. Sensitive and acne-prone skin with a history of eczema and other skin allergies.

Packaging

The one I got is the sample tube so can’t really comment on the packaging. 😬

Fragrance

A default Lakme or sunscreen kind of scent. Mild though — it did not trigger my sneezes. 💀

Runny consistency

I start by taking the required amount and dab it gently across my face and neck once I am down with my skincare routine which is basically Simple liquid moisturizer at the moment — that’s it! I am not using any serum in my day time routine for sometime now simply to give my skin a break.

The consistency is water like, just like ISDIN sunscreen, and once I applied and massaged onto my skin, I noticed it did not left any white cast.

Feels light on the skin ✨

There was no pilling up neither right after application nor throughout the day. The texture is lightweight as claimed by the Brand and It did not made my skin feel heavy or look shiny. It was absorbed within seconds without leaving any greasy residue behind.

Moving further, it did not sting my eyes during application.

Has moisturizing properties

After a few days with regular usage, I felt it does have some kind of hydrating properties probably because of ceramides so I started using it without any moisturizer and it did not disappoint. I believe the summer season and my oily skin has something to do with this too.

Normal to dry skin will feel the need of moisturizer with this sunscreen.

No breakouts or rashes

With the regular usage, I did not experience any breakouts, rashes, or clogged pores. Despite being a chemical sunscreen, it did not result in acne.

I also paired the sunscreen with makeup and it played nicely without making my skin feel heavy or greasy.

No heat rashes 👀

Talking about the sun-protection, my skin did not face any heat rashes or itching so it did a nice job there too. The brand claims to be sweat-resistant. I do not have any such tools to verify the fact but with the sweat, I did not experience any itch or pimples.

Overall, texture and absorbtion wise, I am impressed with Lakme Dry Matte Fluid sunscreen. It is just it has chemical filters with controversial ingredients. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes. It does have chemical filters with no presence of mineral/physical filters. In the age of new-gen chemical filters, this one still contains debatable and controversial ingredients.

Yes. Texture wise, it felt lightweight and non-sticky and performed well on my oily skin. It did not felt heavy or looked greasy post application.

The product page on the official Lakme website does have “PETA Approved” labelling. That being said, I am not 100% sure if it is for the product, the Brand, or the manufacturer as a whole.

Yes. Though it is designed for oily skin, making it a lightweight one. It can still be used by dry skin people because it did not dry out my skin. Pairing with moisturizer, this can be worn on dry skin.

Final Thoughts – Lakme Fluid Sunscreen SPF50 Review

I would have given this sunscreen a 10/10 if it weren’t for not-so-skin-friendly chemical filters. I am no dermatologist, but what I have gathered in my knowledge is that sunscreens with avobenzone are not ideal for the skin, and considering the fact that I have sensitive skin with eczema history, I shouldn’t be using one with avobenzone and other chemical filters to avoid repercussions. Texture-wise, the feel on the skin, the way it is absorbed within seconds, it impressed me — no doubt!

Pros

  • Lightweight texture
  • PA++++ (high sheild protection)
  • Get absorbs quickly
  • Peta approved
  • Leaves no white cast
  • Doesn’t pills-up
  • Doesn’t feel heavy on the skin
  • No breakouts or rashes

Cons

  • Contains traditional chemical filters
  • No physical filters
