How I Finally Cleared My Acne by Cutting Sugar and Bread From My Diet

Like many of you, I dealt with the usual teenage acne during my high school years. You know, the typical breakouts during exam stress, monthly periods, or before important events. But then things got better, and throughout my early twenties, my skin was relatively clear. I thought I had finally outgrown the acne phase of my life.

treated acne by reducing sugar

But, after turning 25, my skin started to develop this painful red acne, and even though I was able to treat the active ones they kept coming back.

If anyone’s curious, all my beauty purchases are from Nykaa.

I started getting these persistent, hormonal breakouts that were nothing like my teenage acne. These were deep, painful spots that would take forever to heal, only to be replaced by new ones.

The worst part? No matter what expensive skincare product I tried or how religious I was with my routine, nothing seemed to help. That is until I discovered an unexpected connection that changed everything.

The Reality of Adult Acne in My Life

Before I share how changing my diet transformed my skin, let me be real about what I was dealing with. This wasn’t just the occasional pimple that popped up during stressful times. I had persistent, painful acne that left red marks and scars.

The kind where people would say “Have you tried washing your face?” (Yes, Karen, I have tried washing my face! 🙄)

The impact on my daily life was huge. I would:

  • Cancel plans last minute because of bad breakouts
  • Spend ages applying makeup, only to feel it looked worse
  • Avoid bright lighting at all costs
  • Take selfies at very specific angles

Sound familiar? I bet many of you are nodding right now.

Now, those who are at a mature point in life would see the situation from a different perspective. I too now, at the age of almost 30 go out in a messy bun to buy something from a local market but that phase was different.

I think that’s the age where we are so.. I don’t know what’s the right word we are so particular with our appearance and everything.

But as we grow up and become mature, things change right?

My Breaking Point

After trying and spending on a bunch of expensive products that did absolutely nothing, I hit my breaking point.

From every other face wash to face pack, I was tired of temporary solutions and ready to try anything. That’s when I fell into a late-night research rabbit hole about the connection between diet and skin health.

I even went for costly skin treatments in salons. 😑

What I discovered completely changed my perspective. Study after study showed links between high-sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, and acne. Looking at my daily diet, everything suddenly made sense.

My Breakfast and Snacking habits were the real culprit

While my main meals were generally healthy, it was my breakfast and snacking habits that were secretly wreaking havoc on my skin.

sugar and bread were the cause of acne

My morning would always start with bread – either toast with eggs or a quick sandwich. Then throughout the day, especially during the day, I’d mindlessly munch on biscuits with my green tea breaks.

Basically, without even realizing it, I was feeding my acne through these seemingly innocent snacking habits.

While my lunch and dinner were filled with wholesome, home-cooked meals, these in-between bread and sugar moments were quietly triggering my breakouts.

It’s not the lunch or dinnertime meals, it’s the snacking habits and weekend eating that caused the trouble. I thought I had a far better routine than a lot of others but nope!

Am I the only one who gets cravings or feels like eating something interesting at 5 in the evening?

Though my cravings are a lot more in control now. It’s all about how the mind works I guess.

Understanding the Sugar-Skin Connection

Before making any changes, I wanted to understand exactly how sugar and refined carbohydrates might be affecting my skin.

Through my research, I discovered that when we consume high-glycemic foods, our blood sugar spikes rapidly, triggering a surge of insulin. This insulin spike can increase sebum production in our skin, trigger inflammation throughout the body, and lead to an increase in androgens – hormones that can worsen acne.

The inflammation aspect particularly interested me.

High sugar consumption causes inflammation throughout the body, making existing acne more red and swollen while slowing down the skin’s natural healing process. Additionally, refined carbohydrates can disrupt our gut microbiome, leading to increased skin inflammation and hormonal imbalances.

The Reality of Making Changes

Let me be completely honest with you – this journey wasn’t a smooth ride, and those first few weeks were tough.

Really tough.

I had intense cravings for my evening namkeens-biscuit ritual, and yes, there were mood swings (my family can vouch for this!). Every time someone would bring cookies or my family felt like having bread pakoras for evening snacks, my willpower would be tested.

In case you are wondering, I work from home and this, blog is my place of work. 🙈

Here is how I Implemented the changes

Here’s how I made it work – baby steps. Instead of going cold turkey, I started making small, manageable changes. I knew in my mind that my body and my mood were going to swing a lot because of these changes but I would have to stick to my decision.

I switched to makhanas (fox nuts) for my evening snacks, which surprisingly became my new favorite munchies.

If not fox nuts, then a bowl Poha would do the job. I love that by the way.

When sugar cravings hit hard, I’d reach for a protein bar instead of biscuits. Some days I succeeded, some days I didn’t – and that’s okay. The key was to keep trying.

Those protein bars or anything with sugar-free labels isn’t healthy as well. The sugar alternatives they have, aren’t much healthier but when on a journey to cut down or eliminate sugar, they come in handy.

I quit sandwiches, any meal with bread, outside food with carbs, biscuits, and basically unhealthy munching. I did it for months before I started having them occasionally.

Instead of regular rotis made with wheat flour, I started having one mixed with multigrain or jowar flour just to make them healthier.

I want to be real with you – if you’re planning to try this, know that it won’t be quick or easy.

There will be days when you’ll question if it’s worth it. Your body and mind will rebel against these changes.

But trust me on this – keeping away from excess sugar and bread will not only transform your skin but also make you feel better overall. The key is to be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories.

Every time you choose a healthier alternative, you’re one step closer to clearer skin.

This mindset/approach will definitely help you (it helped me)

Instead of thinking that I can not eat this or I ain’t eating this, I started to think and say “I am a person who doesn’t eat this”. Getting my point?

You know how you would say with a straight-forward face “No, I don’t do this” or “No, I don’t smoke” because that’s a part of who you are. Not something you want the third person to think of you.

So I implemented that kind of mindset.

I started to consider myself a person who doesn’t eat anything with sugar or bread. This genuinely helped.

How My Skin Changed

The transformation wasn’t instant, but it was steady. Within the first two weeks, I noticed:

  • Less oiliness throughout the day
  • Existing acne healing faster
  • Fewer new breakouts
  • No more large pores

By the end of the month:

  • My skin was clearer than it had been in years
  • The constant inflammation had calmed down
  • My complexion looked brighter overall
  • I actually felt confident with the way my skin looked

What I Want You to Know

If you’re struggling with acne right now, I get it. I really do. And while I can’t promise that cutting back on sugar and bread will be your miracle solution, I can say it’s worth trying. Start small. Maybe just cut out one sugary thing you eat regularly. See what happens.

  • You don’t have to give up these foods forever
  • It’s okay to have treats sometimes but stick to the no-sugar phase for a few months when you first start it out
  • Journal the feelings down because most of the time, it’s our mind that wants to feel the satisfaction and not our foodie stomach
  • Don’t eliminate sugar from fruits
  • Reflect and examine why exactly you want that unhealthy food item because in my case, it was usually out of evening boredom so I decided to go to my society gym from 5-5:40 PM.
  • Consider reflecting on your routine and setting aside some relaxation time if you aren’t already. A stressed mind and body crave for interesting foods than anything. I now watch an episode or two after finishing my work and before sleeping. It feels good to me.

The best part? This approach is free. No expensive products are required. Just some mindful choices about what you eat.

It’s Not Like I Don’t Get Acne Anymore!

Of course, I do. Sometimes by unhealthy munching and sometimes by literally any other thing but that’s NORMAL.

But, I am happy to say that I have managed to clear the intense situation of jawline and cheek acne. 😌

My Go-To Acne Fighting Products

Before I discovered the diet connection, I tried practically every acne product on the market. Through all that trial and error, I did find two holy grail products that I still swear by when I get the occasional breakout:

  • Mario Badescu Drying Solution: This stuff is literally magic in a bottle for those painful, under-the-skin spots. I apply it at night on any active breakouts, and by morning, they’re significantly calmer. It’s like a spot treatment on steroids! Here is my detailed review of the Mario Badescu drying lotion.
  • Acne Patches: These are absolute lifesavers! I put them on any spots that are coming to a head, and they work wonders overnight. Plus, they prevent me from picking at my skin (we all do it, let’s be honest). My favorite is one from Derma-angel.

While these products are still part of my skincare routine for occasional breakouts, discovering the diet connection was what really changed the game for me.

Finding Joy in Balance

Here’s something really important I want to share with you – this isn’t a story about completely eliminating bread and sugar from my life. Because let’s be real, what kind of life would that be? I still enjoy a slice of pizza with family, celebrate birthdays with cake, and indulge in my favorite treats occasionally.

Life is too short to never eat a cookie again!

As someone who loves exploring different cuisines and believes in enjoying life’s pleasures, complete restriction was never my goal. Instead, I’ve found a beautiful balance that works for me.

What’s changed is my approach to these foods.

Instead of mindlessly snacking on sugary treats throughout the day or having bread with every meal, I’ve become more intentional about when and how much I consume.

I save these foods for moments that truly matter not because I am bored – family outings, special occasions, or those days when I really, really want that chocolate chip cookie.

The best part? Now I actually enjoy these treats more because they’re special rather than routine. And most importantly, I understand my skin’s relationship with these foods.

If I notice a breakout after a weekend of indulgence, I don’t panic. I know exactly what triggered it, and more importantly, I know how to get my skin back on track.

This journey has taught me that the key isn’t elimination – it’s understanding and balance. By being mindful of my sugar and bread intake while still allowing myself to enjoy life’s pleasures, I’ve found a sustainable way to maintain clearer skin without feeling deprived.

Final Thoughts

While everyone’s skin is different, and what works for one person might not work for another, my experience has convinced me that diet plays a crucial role in skin health.

If you’re battling persistent acne, considering the role of sugar and refined carbohydrates in your diet might be worth exploring.

Well, there is so much more than sugar and just bread when it comes to acne. Literally, so-much-more but this post was all about my experiences with cutting down on sugar and slices of bread.

Remember, this is just my personal experience, and it’s always wise to consult with a healthcare provider before making significant dietary changes.

But for me, the decision to cut back on sugar and bread was a game-changer in my journey to clearer skin.

That was it for today. I hope you have found my experience in dealing with acne helpful. I am excited to know your thoughts and opinions. Let me know in the comments below.

Have a Good Day.
