Nivea Shine Control SPF 50 Review – In this article, I will be sharing my complete product review of the Nivea Face Shine Control Sunscreen which was recently launched in India. I tested out the sunscreen on my combination skin. Keep on reading to know my complete experience.

I received this sunscreen from Nivea as a part of Nykaa PR and even though I was inclined towards the Nivea UV Face Sensitive Skin variant, the shine control variant did not look disappointing either.

My skin at this point is neither too dry as it was a year back due to allergies, nor is it super oily. I experience heavy sweating, especially in this humid season, and as a result, my face looks super oily while experiencing dryness in between. How weird it is!

I have been using this sunscreen for some time now on my sensitive and acne-prone skin and if you have been looking for Nivea Shine Control SPF 50 review, you are on the right page.

Why I Rated this Sunscreen 2/5?

The texture is too heavy, especially for the summer season. The Sunscreens says it is mattifying and lightweight but it is completely the opposite. It is too heavy and oily and right after application made my skin sweaty and sticky. It did offer good sun protection but I couldn’t bear the oily feeling.

For some reason, the ingredient list I see on Nykaa is completely different from what I have on the product.

The ingredient list matches what I see on the Nivea India website, and on Incidecoder.

Packaging

It comes in an opaque squeezable tube with a flip-flop cap. The nozzle is not exactly how I prefer sunscreens. I like those pointed nozzles more when it comes to sunscreens as they help with mess-free usage of the product.

Fragrance

Typical Nivea scent. If you have used any Nivea cream or their body lotion, you would know what I am referring to.

My Experience with Nivea Shine Control SPF 50 Sunscreen

My Skin Type: Sensitive and acne-prone skin. Normal to dry skin with seasonal oiliness.

My daytime skincare routine is incomplete with sunscreen – as it should.

I took two-finger amounts of the Nivea sunscreen and the first thing that made me uncomfortable was the nozzle. When there is a pointed nozzle it is quite easy to take it out on fingers while with this one, it is a tad bit messy.

The moment I saw the thick shiny consistency of this sunscreen I had a sensation that it ain’t going to be light.

I spread the sunscreen evenly on my face and immediately felt the heaviness on my face. The texture of the sunscreen was easy to apply and massage but it felt like heavy cream with oil mixed in it.

No white cast but feels oily upon application

I did not experience any white cast or piling up of sunscreen while application but I did feel the stickiness post-application. Considering the humid weather, I gave this sunscreen the benefit of the doubt and allowed it to settle in.

Within a few seconds, my face started to feel so oily and sweaty and shortly it became quite uncomfortable. I was in an AC room so I managed but if I had this sunscreen on while going out, that would be a huge mistake.

My face looked as if I just come home from the gym.

All the claims that Nivea made regarding shine control sunscreen such as instant mattifying, non-sticky, and dry touch were not at all true. It is like the brand went in the completely opposite direction.

I do not have super oily skin which I used to have before my 20s and yet I felt this sunscreen was way too oily for me. I think it will do okay for very dry skin too in dry weather or the winter season but it is not at all for normal, combination, or oily skin and not at all for the summer season.

Did Nivea Face Shine Control Sunscreen result in breakouts?

Unfortunately, I couldn’t use it regularly or frequently to see how effective it is on my acne-prone skin because I felt so uncomfortable with the heavy texture but seeing this oily texture, I would not suggest this to people with sensitive and acne-prone skin.

That being said, I did not notice any tingling or stinging on my skin and eyes and neither it caused any itch.

Offered Decent Sun Protection

I did not experience any itching, redness, or rashes which is a sign of a good sunscreen. I usually get red rashes in heat but this one I did not experience any such issue.

1. Is Nivea Shine Control SPF 50 a chemical sunscreen?

Yes. Nivea Shine Control sunscreen does contain some chemical filters such as Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane), Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, and Ethylhexyl Triazone.

That being said, chemical filters like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, Octocrylene, and Microplastics are not present in Nivea Shine Control sunscreen which is also a plus point.

Ingredients like Zinc and Titanium dioxide (physical filters) are not present in Nivea Shine Control sunscreen.

2. Is Nivea Shine Control Sunscreen a broad-spectrum sunscreen?

Yes, it offers both, UVA and UVB protection.

3. Why protection grading (PA+++) is missing from the label?

At first, I thought that was why the grading was missing but they have quoted “high” under the UVA/UVB label which I believe is high protection – equivalent to somewhat PA+++.

Nivea Shine Control sunscreen – Final Thoughts

Nivea Shine Control SPF 50 made my skin super oily and sweaty. The texture is heavy and not at all mattifying or shine-controlling. My skin felt sticky post-application. I did not experience any itch, burn, or redness which I liked about it. It might do okay during the winter season or for the body but not for the face.
