We all love going out. Who doesn’t? But sometimes you just want quality time without the noise, the crowds, or the bill at the end of the night. If you are planning a close friend’s meet up anytime soon then you are at the right place because some of the best friend hangouts happen right in your living room.

I’ve pulled together things to do with friends at home that go beyond the usual movie night (though no shade to movie nights, they’re classics for a reason). These are the activities that actually get everyone engaged, create those inside jokes you’ll reference forever, and make you wonder why you ever thought you needed to leave the house in the first place.

1. Turn Your Kitchen Into a Perfume Lab

Get some essential oils, tiny glass bottles, and a carrier oil like jojoba or sweet almond, and everyone gets to blend their own signature scent.

You’re literally sniffing different combinations, keeping notes about what works, and by the end of the night you have a fragrance that’s completely yours.

The whole place smells amazing, jasmine mixing with coffee and vanilla and it’s weirdly addictive trying to get your perfect blend.

2. Paint Night But Make It Pottery

Order some unglazed ceramic pieces online or just grab terracotta pots from the garden section and spend the evening painting them with acrylics.

Everyone’s creating their own little world on a mug or planter, and there’s something really satisfying about designing something you’ll actually use every day.

Put on a good playlist, maybe light some candles, and suddenly you’re all artists with paint-stained fingers and pieces you’ll actually want to keep.

3. Host a Dessert Decorating Competition

Everyone bakes the same base—cupcakes, sugar cookies, mini cakes and then you set out all the decorating supplies and compete to make the prettiest or most creative design.

Buttercream, edible glitter, fresh fruit, chocolate drizzle, whatever you can find. You’re laughing at the attempts, stealing techniques from each other, and obviously eating way too much sugar. Not that much though probably. 🙈

4. Design Custom Phone Cases Together

Get clear phone cases and acrylic paint, pressed flowers, stickers, tiny printed photos, whatever you want to seal inside. Everyone’s creating their own wearable art that they’ll see every single day.

You can paint directly on them, layer dried flowers and resin, or create little collages. How fun! 🥹

5. Create a Zine Together

Make a physical zine about literally anything. Your friend group’s inside jokes, favorite recipes, dreams for the year, poems, collages.

Everyone contributes pages, you photocopy or print it all, and then you have this tangible thing that captures exactly where you all are right now.

It’s creative without being precious about it, and flipping through it later hits different.

6. Create a Scrapbook Wall Collage

Get a big poster board or canvas and everyone brings printed photos, magazine cutouts, ticket stubs, pressed flowers, fabric scraps, anything with texture and memory. You’re building this huge collaborative collage that captures your friendship right now. Glue sticks everywhere, scissors, maybe some paint or markers to fill gaps, and you end up with this beautiful chaotic piece of art.

7. Have a Blind Taste Test Challenge

Pick a category, fancy chocolate, different olive oils, local honey varieties, cheese, hot sauces, whatever. Everyone brings one option wrapped up so it’s anonymous, and you all rate them without knowing which is which. You end up having the funniest debates about flavor profiles, and there’s always that one person who’s convinced they can tell the expensive one (they usually can’t).

8. Make a Time Capsule Box

Everyone brings things that feel important right now—photos, printed texts, little objects, letters to your future selves, playlists written on paper.

Decorate the box together, seal it up, and decide when you’ll open it.

It sounds sentimental but it’s actually really fun, especially when you’re adding ridiculous things alongside the meaningful stuff.

9. Make Japanese Moss Ball Planters

Kokedama is the art of wrapping plant roots in moss and soil to create these beautiful hanging orbs. You’re getting your hands dirty, shaping the balls, tying them with string, and creating these living sculptures that look incredible hanging by windows. It’s meditative and earthy, and everyone leaves with their own little floating garden.

10. Build a Miniature Room or Fairy Garden

Get small containers, tiny furniture pieces, moss, pebbles, miniature plants, and create these intricate little worlds. You’re arranging tiny scenes, maybe a reading nook the size of your palm or a whole garden that fits in a teacup. It’s detailed and absorbing in the best way, and everyone gets completely lost in making their tiny universe perfect.

11. Design Your Own Oracle Cards

Get blank cardstock or thick paper and everyone creates their own cards—illustrating concepts, emotions, or symbols that mean something to you. You’re painting, drawing, adding collage elements, and by the end you have this deeply personal deck that’s completely yours. Pull cards for each other and see what interpretations come up.

12. Kirtan Nights That Fill Your Soul

Kirtan is call-and-response devotional singing, and you don’t need to be musical to make it meaningful. One person leads a mantra like “Hare Krishna” and everyone responds, creating this flowing, meditative rhythm that quiets your mind.

Set the space with candles or diyas, incense, cushions in a circle, maybe simple instruments like bells or a harmonium if someone plays, but voices alone are honestly enough.

Its special is how it bypasses small talk and takes you straight to something deeper—after a session, conversations become more open and vulnerable, and singing together bonds people in a way nothing else does.

13. Make Your Own Chocolate Bar Flavors

Get melting chocolate, molds, and go wild with mix-ins, dried fruit, nuts, sea salt, edible flowers, matcha powder, crushed cookies. Everyone’s creating their own flavor combinations, pouring them into molds, and waiting impatiently for them to set. You’re basically becoming chocolatiers for the night, and tasting everyone’s creations is half the fun.

14. Dive Into the Gita Over Chai and Conversation

Pick a chapter or a few verses from the Bhagavad Gita, read them together, and discuss what they mean to each of you. Its beautiful how a verse about duty written thousands of years ago somehow speaks to your current career confusion, and Krishna’s advice about fear hits different when you’re facing modern battles.

Structure it however feels right—go chapter by chapter over time, or do themed sessions on detachment, karma, finding peace.

Serve chai and snacks to keep it warm and welcoming, and the discussions end up going places you don’t expect, connecting ancient wisdom to breakups, ambition, anxiety, and all the real stuff happening in your lives.

15. Have a Candle Making Session

Get soy wax, wicks, and fragrance oils, and pour candles in thrifted teacups or small jars. You’re experimenting with scent combinations, choosing pretty containers, and making something you’ll burn for months while remembering this exact afternoon. Your home would smell incredible and everyone will be weirdly proud of their creation.

16. Host a Tambola Night With Actual Prizes

Set up a proper tambola game with cards, little prizes for each round (full house, corners, middle line—all of it), and make it feel like an event. Everyone brings small gifts to add to the prize pile, you’re calling numbers, the competitive energy gets real, and suddenly you’re all way too invested in winning a candle or a cute mug. It’s nostalgic and chaotic in the best way.

17. Host a Murder Mystery Dinner

Get one of those boxed mystery games or write your own, assign characters, and commit to the bit.

Everyone dresses up, stays in character through dinner, and you’re solving this ridiculous mystery while eating whatever themed food you’ve decided on.

The drama, the accusations, the costumes, everything will be theatrical & fun. 🥹

18. Have a Letterpress and Stamp Carving Night

Grab some carving blocks, linoleum cutters, and ink pads, and everyone designs their own stamp. Carve patterns, initials, little illustrations, whatever.

Then you test them on nice paper, making cards or prints or bookmarks. It’s tactile and creative, and you leave with something you actually made with your hands that looks legit.
