5 Essential Oils Everyone Use for Hair Care & Why

In Partnership with VedaOils
Essential oils are everywhere lately, on Pinterest boards, and in hair-care videos. People have been reaching for them for all kinds of reasons. These concentrated plant oils have been used in hair care for a long time, often for specific purposes related to the scalp, hair feel, or overall routine. They’re not instant fixes, but when used thoughtfully, they can become a regular part of how people care for their hair.
Let’s discuss a few essential oils that are commonly used in hair care and what each one is generally known for, so you can understand why people choose them and how they’re typically used.
The Five Worth Knowing About
1. Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary Essential Oil smells herby and fresh. It is known for getting more blood flowing to your scalp, which helps deliver nutrients to your hair roots.
That better circulation can make your roots stronger and help reduce hair breakage.
If you’re noticing your hair getting thinner or you’re shedding more than usual, rosemary is usually the first one people try. It strengthens what’s already there so less hair falls out. And it keeps your scalp clean, which helps with dandruff too.

2. Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender is that one oil that somehow does everything without being harsh. It calms down irritated scalps and makes your existing hair softer and shinier.
If your scalp gets itchy or dry a lot, lavender usually helps.
The smell is also just really nice like actually relaxing, not fake spa vibes.
3. Tea Tree Essential Oil
This one’s strong. Tea tree oil is what you use when your scalp is being difficult with persistent dandruff, buildup that won’t go away, that general gross feeling.
My Personal Favourites
It cleans out your hair follicles and fights the fungus that causes a lot of scalp issues.
It works fast compared to other oils, but heads up, it smells pretty medicinal. Some people love it, some people don’t. But if you’re dealing with real scalp drama, it’s worth dealing with the smell.
4. Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint gives you that cooling, tingly feeling on your scalp. That’s the way it works. Increasing blood circulation and waking up your hair follicles.
It’s really good if your scalp gets oily because it makes everything feel clean and fresh.
That tingly sensation is also just nice? Like it makes washing your hair feel more satisfying.
5. Cedarwood Essential Oil
Cedarwood smells woody and warm. It’s good at regulating oil production, so if your scalp gets greasy fast, this helps balance that out. It also strengthens your hair at the roots, which is helpful if your hair’s getting thinner. It’s one of those oils that just makes your scalp feel more normal, you know? Less extreme in either direction.
Castor Oil: What it actually does (& doesn’t) for Hair
Important!!
Never put essential oils directly on your scalp!!
They’re too strong and will irritate your skin. Always mix them with a carrier oil first, coconut oil, jojoba oil, whatever you have.
The ratio is about 3-5 drops of essential oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil. Mix it, massage it into your scalp with your fingers, let it sit for at least 30 minutes (overnight is even better), then wash your hair like normal.
To simplify,
- Mix 2–3 drops of essential oil with 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil
- Massage gently. No aggressive rubbing
- Use 1–2 times a week, especially if you have a sensitive scalp
You can also just add a few drops to your regular shampoo, but the oil massage before washing works better in my experience.
Don’t Forget to Test Them First!!!
This sounds annoying but do a patch test before you use anything new on your whole scalp. Put a tiny bit of the diluted oil on your inner arm and wait 24 hours to see if you react. Essential oils are natural but that doesn’t mean everyone’s skin likes them.
Timing and Consistency is Important
It takes a few weeks to start seeing anything, and a couple months for real changes.
If you use them once and forget about it, nothing will happen. But if you do it 2-3 times a week consistently, that’s when you’ll actually notice a difference.
How Often to Use Them
Start with once or twice a week. See how your scalp responds and adjust from there.
And if you’re dealing with serious hair loss or bad scalp problems, talk to a dermatologist first. Essential oils help, but sometimes you need actual medical treatment too.
Wrapping Up
The thing about essential oils is they’re not a miracle fix. They just work if you’re patient and keep using them.
But once you find the ones that work for your hair, they become one of those things you don’t want to stop using because you can actually tell the difference.
