As a rich source of vitamin C and Citric Acid, Lemons are known for their special cleansing effects, particularly when you add a few newly cut slices to your water. 

Lemon is used since ages in the beauty industry. It is highly known to reduce pimple marks and dark spots.

Lemons are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients which not only are beneficial for the body but also has a very positive role in the beauty regime.

On the other hand, using lemons on your face can also have slight negative effects especially if you have sensitive skin and suffer from dehydration of the skin frequently.

Using lemons on your face can sometimes cause more harm as every skin type is different. I personally, suffered from skin rashes when I decided to try some home remedies having Lemon.

1. Lemon is an excellent source to lessen dark spots and pimple marks. Lemon juice is used since ages to reduce dark spots by mixing it in Homemade Face Packs. Lemon juice’s citric acid slowly disappears spots and evens out the skin.

2. Lemon is also known to be effective in reducing blackheads and excess oil from the face. Simply diluting the lemon juice with water or even honey, and applying a thin layer on your face with a help of a cotton pad before going to bed, is known to be a great remedy to reduce excess oil production.

3. Lemons also have got antimicrobial effects that help in treating acne. At the same time, lemon also has antifungal effects, which is why they are widely used in both, skincare and haircare regimes to keep skin and hair problem-free.

4. Lemon is also considered to increase the collagen level. Few of the supporters of using lemon on the skin say that the citrus fruit is a standard technique of increasing collagen level in the skin. It has a protein that breaks down with age, which can further reduce the lines and wrinkles and delays aging.

1. Rub a lemon peel on the skin. It will help to wash the skin and gradually lifting it over time. This is considered one of the best remedies to get rid of dry skin.

2. Cut lemon slices, run them underwater for a few seconds, and squeeze out the juice onto a cotton ball. Apply evenly to your face and rinse off after 15 minutes for a well cleansed and exfoliated skin.

3. By adding a few drops of lemon juice into your homemade face packs, helps you to get rid of dark spots and helps in attaining in even skin tone.

1. Skin Irritation

Skin irritation is the most common side effect of using fruit acids. Lemon is tremendously acidic, that could damage and annoy your skin. If the skin is dry, or even extremely sensitive, it may burn your skin. You will end up having rashes which cause bad pain.

2. Sunburn

Any fruits that contain citrus are known to increase skin sensitivity and might cause sunburn as a result. Remember, not to apply lemon before going outside in direct sunlight, and do not use it on a regular basis before any planned event.

3. Increased Skin Sensitivity

As mentioned, lemons can increase your skin sensitivity, as a result, your skin starts developing reactions to high sun exposure and cosmetics products. It can cause flaky skin, red rashes, and even itchiness.

4. Breakouts

Even though lemons are considered to treat acne by killing acne-causing bacteria, using lemons on your face can also end up adding more and more pimples. It happens when your skin is allergic to lemons as a result, skin starts breaking out.

Please note, using lemons directly on your face and using vitamin-c serum in your beauty regime are different concepts. Lemons are highly concentrated and can be really strong for your skin whereas vitamin-c serums are formulated in a way which works efectively in improving the skin without causing any possible harmful effect.


No doubt, Lemons are great for your beauty regime, it is essential to discuss with your skin doctor about its efficiency. As every individual has different skin type, one ingredient might work for one, and not for others. Always remember to do a patch test to see if the ingredient is causing any irritation or not.
