Bioflavonoids and vitamin C are vital for the overall health of the eyes and body. Foods that are Rich in Vitamin C include citrus fruits whereas many different vegetables deliver essential bioflavonoids to the body. Medical research has concluded that a combined intake of both is more effective.

Your Eyes and Vitamin C

Ascorbic acid (also known as vitamin C) is a strong antioxidant and soluble in water which is abundant in many different fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C helps in the development and maintenance of essential and interconnected body tissues including collagen which is present in the cornea. It also promotes the healthy development of the skin, bones and blood vessels including delicate retinal capillaries. When receiving a wound, cut or any other injury per se, vitamin C helps in healing.

Although studies have suggested that long-term consumption of vitamin C prevents the development of cataract as well as reduces the risk of age-related macular degeneration, any eye or vision anomaly needs to be checked by an Ophthalmologist in Dubai.

Unlike animals, the human body is unable to produce vitamin C on its own which is why daily consumption of ascorbic acid is essential.

Yet another medical research concluded that more or less 500 mg of vitamin C consumption on a regular basis reduces the risk of cataracts.

Some excellent Natural Sources of Vitamin C include citrus and Tropical Fruits, Peppers, Tomatoes, Leafy-Green Vegetables, and Potatoes.

The highest content of Vitamin C is found in

  • Sweet red and green peppers

Remember that the above food items deliver maximum and essential vitamin C when taken raw (uncooked). Canned and cooked foods decrease the total content whereas exposure to direct sunlight literally destroys vitamin C from foods.

Bioflavonoids are present mostly in the foods and sources similar to those of vitamin C. That being said, researchers explored above 8,000 structures of naturally occurring bioflavonoids. Also known as ‘flavonoids’ are the natural pigments (dyes) which give fruits and vegetables their bright and distinguished colors.

Studying bioflavonoids revealed many health benefits.

Quercetin stabilizes cell membranes which releases histamine; a compound active in healing inflammatory and allergic reactions. It’s found in citrus fruits and buckwheat whereas quercetin helps in preventing seasonal allergies.

Rutin is another bioflavonoid which protects you from bleeding and other easy bruising abnormalities.

Bilberries and blueberries contain a high percentage of anthocyanin which is a bioflavonoid pigment and a powerful antioxidant.

Anthocyanin is known best for reducing the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts while helping in maintaining the good health of the cornea and various blood capillaries in the eye.

Other potential eye Benefits of Anthocyanin Include Reduction of Inflammatory Eye Diseases as well as the development of diabetic retinopathy. Other than bilberries and blueberries, other essential Sources of Anthocyanin include Cranberries, Eggplant, Plums, Cherries, Acai Fruit, Raspberries, Red and Purple Grapes.

Much like vitamin C, bioflavonoids are non-toxic and soluble in water even when ingested at a high dosage.

ConclusionWhile all the above facts hold true, any particular eye or vision abnormality requires immediate examination by a proper Ophthalmologist for timely and accurate treatment.

So, this was it for today. I hope you have found this post helpful. Have a Good Day! 😇
